Let’s talk about death and why I created Hello I’m Dead. In the last decade, several of my family members and friends have died. During COVID quarantining I started to feel the heavy weight of loss more and more. Like many who have lost loved ones, I was on a grief roller coaster and felt helpless, alone, and robbed of the chance to say goodbye one last time.

I reluctantly began planning for the day when I transition. Like many, I had put off creating a Living Trust and Will but decided it was time to take care of loose ends after witnessing the stress and confusion families are left with when there are no end-of-life plans. Completing these tasks gave me a sense of relief, it felt good to be able to leave my legacy and treasures to my loved ones. I also decided that my funeral would be one kick-ass party where all my loved ones would drink Champagne while story-telling and celebrating with tears of happiness, not sadness.

This is the one time that I will say: Don’t trust the process. Death planning sucks. It’s confusing, expensive, and lacks personalization. It feels like a burden. But we must plan because our loved ones deserve closure (and so do we). Most people use a combination of legal sites, spreadsheets, and social media to plan and communicate memorial wishes. We need a streamline way to memorialize and plan for end-of-life so that it feels less lonely and more creative. We need to redefine the process.
